Zambezi River Cruises: At the Foot of Victoria Falls, in the Heart of Wild Africa
Imagine sailing along a mighty river, as a cloud of mist rises in the distance and a deep roar grows ever louder — Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, reveals itself in all its breathtaking immensity… A cruise on the Zambezi is an experience that defies imagination — raw natural power and the magic of wild Africa in one extraordinary journey.
The Zambezi is one of Africa's great rivers, flowing through Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique across landscapes of untamed, unspoilt beauty. As you sail, you spot elephants, hippos, crocodiles and a wealth of tropical birds coming to drink at the water's edge — often just a few metres from your boat. Unlike the Chobe, the Zambezi offers a longer, more immersive river cruise experience, at the unhurried pace of a river that has shaped this continent for millennia.
And then there are Victoria Falls — "Mosi-oa-Tunya", "the smoke that thunders" in the local tongue. At 1,700 metres wide and 108 metres high, they are among the largest waterfalls on earth. Seeing them from the river, then approaching on foot, is a moment that stays with you for a lifetime.
AmaWaterways is currently the only cruise line offering itineraries on the Zambezi — a guarantee of quality and expertise for this exceptional destination.
When is the best time to cruise the Zambezi?
The dry season, from May to October, is ideal: vegetation thins out, animals gather near the river and navigation conditions are at their best. Victoria Falls are particularly spectacular in the early dry season (May–June), when water levels are still high after the rains. The Zambezi can be visited all year round, with pleasant temperatures even during the austral winter.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Zambezi cruise and a Chobe safari cruise?
The Chobe is a safari-cruise circuit combining a private lodge, jeep excursions and a few days of sailing on the river. The Zambezi is a true river cruise on one of Africa's great rivers, with the spectacular Victoria Falls as its crowning highlight. The two destinations complement each other perfectly and can easily be combined in a single trip.
Can I see Victoria Falls on a Zambezi cruise?
Yes! Victoria Falls are generally included in Zambezi itineraries, whether visited from the Zambian or Zimbabwean side. A walking excursion takes you up close to the falls — an utterly awe-inspiring experience.
Where do Zambezi cruises depart from?
Itineraries generally depart from Livingstone in Zambia or Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, both easily reached by plane from Johannesburg. From the UK, we arrange your flights and transfers included in your package.
