Transatlantic Cruises: Crossing the Atlantic Between Two Worlds
There is something deeply romantic about crossing the Atlantic by ship — following the route of the great explorers, watching the horizon merge with the ocean, feeling time slow down with each passing day at sea… A transatlantic cruise is a unique experience, far from the noise of everyday life, where you rediscover the pleasure of doing nothing — or everything on board.
The Atlantic crossing runs in both directions. From Europe to the United States, but also from New York, Central America or South America back to Europe. For most major cruise lines, these crossings are repositioning cruises: the ships need to cross the ocean anyway to reach their seasonal sailing areas. From October to November, they leave Europe to head for the Caribbean for the winter season. From April to May, they make the return journey to spend the summer in the Mediterranean. These crossings are often offered at exceptionally attractive prices — since the ships are crossing regardless, cruise lines offer competitive fares to fill the cabins.
MSC also offers transatlantic crossings to South America — an original way to reach Brazil or Argentina by sea.
But the undisputed queen of the Atlantic is Cunard and its legendary Queen Mary 2 — the only true ocean liner still in service today. Aboard the QM2, the Southampton–New York crossing is an experience in itself: black-tie dinners in the grand dining room, prestigious lectures, a ballroom, a library, and the incomparable sensation of sailing aboard the world's greatest ocean liner. Cunard operates this crossing all year round, with regular departures between Southampton and New York. It is far more than a cruise — it is a return to the golden age of ocean travel.
For a completely different atmosphere, Star Clippers and Club Med 2 offer Atlantic crossings aboard their magnificent sailing ships — an incomparable experience, with nautical activities, a relaxed atmosphere and a wonderfully friendly spirit on board. Crossing the Atlantic under sail is a way of experiencing the sea like no other, in a true spirit of adventure and camaraderie.
How long does a transatlantic cruise take?
The direct Southampton–New York crossing aboard the Queen Mary 2 takes 7 nights — the minimum for a true transatlantic voyage. Many itineraries are longer, however, with stops in the Canary Islands, the Azores or the Caribbean islands for those heading to Central or South America. These versions with stopovers generally last between 12 and 21 days — ideal for those who wish to discover destinations along the way.
Frequently asked questions
Why choose a transatlantic cruise?
For several unique reasons: absolute rest and total disconnection in the middle of the ocean, time for yourself away from the demands of daily life, and the chance to fully explore everything the ship has to offer — pools, spa, shows, classes, restaurants — that you never have time to enjoy on a classic cruise with daily port calls. And often, unbeatable value for money: since the ships are crossing anyway, cruise lines sometimes offer very attractive fares to fill the cabins.
Can I make stopovers on a transatlantic cruise?
Yes! Many itineraries include stops in the Canary Islands, the Azores, Madeira or the Caribbean islands depending on the direction. It is a wonderful way to combine the magic of an ocean crossing with the discovery of island destinations along the way.
What exactly is the Queen Mary 2?
The Queen Mary 2 is the last true ocean liner in the world — designed specifically to cross the North Atlantic, unlike conventional cruise ships. At 345 metres long, with its Art Deco interiors and legendary service, it embodies the golden age of great ocean voyages. Cunard operates it year-round between Southampton and New York — a true icon of the sea.
Where do transatlantic cruises depart from?
From Europe, the main departure ports are Southampton, Lisbon, Barcelona and Genoa. From the Americas, New York, Miami and Fort Lauderdale are the most common. From the UK, we arrange your transport to the port of departure.
